Chambord Castle - da Vinci Staircase

Chambord Castle

There I was, awestruck once again by Chambord Castle. Even though I had visited that breathtaking landmark countless times, the grandeur and beauty of the “town” that sits atop it still held me in thrall as I stood there, dwarfed by the towers soaring all around me.

My trance-like state was interrupted when I realized I had lost all track of time. The castle doors were now locked, and I might be stuck on the rooftop all night! After trying every doorknob and window I could find, I finally found one that budged a little, wiggled it open, and climbed inside.

Lit solely by the faintest glimmer of natural light, I felt my way down a tiny spiral staircase and into the main hallway. I strode toward the magnificent centerpiece of Chambord, the legendary double-helix staircase, and marveled at its intricate design and architecture as if seeing it for the first time. For once, I was able to take in its beauty without any distractions or disturbances. Despite my lingering anxiety from the thought of having to spend the night on the rooftop, nothing could dampen my enthusiasm and appreciation. Until I stumbled over a woman's body lying inert, face down on the stairs . . .

Retired from the French Secret Service and on vacation in the Loire Valley, I wasn’t looking for a diversion. I was merely enjoying a leisurely visit to a beloved wine-producing region. But I now felt it was my duty to investigate the matter. So began my latest adventure . . .
