Some very clever people have said nice things about my adventures, and I believe they are on the right track! Here is what they’ve said:

The Adventures of Inspector Canal: Fun, Lighthearted, Mysteries Solved By Oracular Psychoanalytic Inquiry
It's a fun read. If you enjoy Psychoanalysis and mystery novels, you will enjoy this. Fink really translates the charming quirks of Lacan into the character, who captivates you the way he captivates the other characters in the stories. Looking forward to reading the other Inspector Canal tales. Warning: You probably want a French Translation app or Dictionary for this book.

The Adventures of Inspector Canal: don't forget you French phrasebook
Fink again shows that he can do something few other Lacanians are capable of, working back towards the signified rather than further away from them. Far from incomprehensible post-modern word-salad, Fink crafts creative and enjoyable narratives filled with subtle humor that even the most casual student of Lacan will enjoy. I cannot help but imagine our Inspector Canal as Agatha Christie's Poirot free of his obsessional neuroses, quietly unpacking the mystery. Depending on how good your French is you might want to bring along your Larousse dictionary to take full advantage of the jokes.

A Reader

The Adventures of Inspector Canal: PsychoCanalytic Crime-Fighting!
Quesjac Canal, wine connoisseur and retiree from the French Secret Service, has been transplanted into contemporary New York City, where he passes his time as an amateur detective. But Canal's unconventional style, his insistence on being called "Doctor"--and yes, his name--reveal that much of his detective training occurred in close proximity to couches. Canal is, of course, the re-incarnation of a certain French psychoanalyst, whose contributions to 20th Century thought are put to work here in an utterly and weirdly pragmatic way: assisting the NYPD.As we watch Canal work, we are treated to a gratifying blend of detective work with philosophical and psychoanalytic fun. Canal solves his cases by psychoanalyzing their players, often playfully, and never in a consulting room. But he also analyzes the culture in which they are situated--in relation to which Canal seems always the Other--at times, more than he truly is. In much detective fiction, disguise is used to blend in (think of Holmes as a beggar on the street), so as not to arouse suspicion. Canal uses it to stand out. The stories themselves stand out in the same way, occupying a place outside the mainstream of modern and contemporary detective fiction. Like Canal himself, the stories insist instead on re-interpreting a more classical Victorian style--complete with handwritten messages delivered to Canal by his butler on a silver salver. From this point of view, Fink and Canal supply critiques of contemporary culture that are insightful, provocative, at times hilarious, and always keep the reader turning the pages. This is not the first time that Bruce Fink has put the man who inspired Canal to work in contemporary American culture. He is one of the foremost commentators on that particular thinker, and has been crossing boundaries between French and American thought for years. With Inspector Canal, Fink goes even further in his mission to make those ideas accessible, this time by putting them into a highly entertaining collection of fiction. This book is a fantastic choice for the detective story fan, the casual reader, and the student of psychoanalysis alike. Five stars!

“Inspector Canal's missing score wins the highest marks on my music stand. [Canal] gives us here a novel with a witty tempo, combining suspense and intelligent entertainment that are bubbly, light, and tasty—not just like Perrier but with the kind of good taste only French Champagne can deliver. This is the work of a great maestro conducting sophisticated characters with psychological mastery. The reader can only clap enthusiastically and cry ‘Encore!’” — Luz Manríquez, Carnegie Mellon University School of Music, winner of the Diapason d’Or in 2008 for “Music for a Summer Evening”

“Inspector Canal, who lives in an enclave of extreme refinement, where upper-class tastefulness reigns, comes to the rescue of perplexed local inspectors. His approach to solving mysteries is an interesting combination of psychoanalysis (he spontaneously analyzes anyone with whom he comes into contact), flirtatiousness, and reliance on the curative effects of gastronomy. Who could object? — Pierre Verdaguer, Professor of French, University of Maryland, author of La Seduction Policière: Signes de Croissance d'un Genre Reputé Mineur ("Detective Seductions: Signs of Growth in a Reputedly Minor Genre")

The Adventures of Inspector Canal: smart and fun read
The three stories making up this novel all share the same chief character (Canal) and a few peripheral ones, but they are self-contained, and each reads fast and fun. Don't worry: Jacques Lacan may be in the title character's name, but he's not required to enjoy this cycle of detective tales. It's a hoot if you can follow some of the author's allusions to Poe and to Lacan and catch some of the interlingual puns (French/English), but it's also an enjoyable read for anybody who likes a detective tale. (At first I thought the name Quesjac was an allusion to Kojak--which perhaps makes this point.) That is not to say that these are typical detective tales. My sense is that they're all about enjoyment: in "Liquidity Squeeze" Inspector Canal's mission seems in the end less to solve the crime than to teach other crime-solvers how to enjoy life. And there's something different about how "criminals" are seen here, too: they're slaves to impossible desires, whose realizations are displaced onto money/power, as the splendid cover suggests. It would be probably be a delight to drink a nice bottle of something with either Canal or his author.
